2008 Hamilton Award - The Chemistry-Medicine Continuum Part 1:
New Strategies for Breaching Biological Barriers and Overcoming Resistant Disease

In this 2008 Hamilton Award Lecture, Professor Paul A. Wender of Stanford University describes, "The Chemistry-Medicine Continuum Part I: New Strategies For Breaching Biological Barriers and Overcoming Resistant Disease". Modern molecular medicine is enabled by the fundamental science of synthesis, the ability to prepare new chemical entities designed to mimic or alter the function of the naturally-occurring compounds controlling biological processes. Nature creates biological barriers to contain and isolate certain processes, including processes leading to disease. Wender's story starts with the synthesis of molecules designed to breach those barriers and deliver therapeutic agents in a controlled manner.
