Meet an Undergrad

Anthony Roy

Anthony Roy graduated from Makuto East Senior High School in Minnesota. Roy made the choice to come to UNL to pursue a degree in Chemistry and get the out-of-state experience.

"I decided to go to UNL because I loved the feel of campus; people take a lot of pride in the university and it’s shown all over campus."

This past spring and summer, Roy volunteered his time doing research in Dr. Jiantao Guo's lab. Roy worked with posttranslational modification of protein cells, specifically tyrosine and other molecules.

"Research is key; I can't stress that enough. UNL offers a great research program that is almost unheard of at other universities. I still keep in touch with some of my friends from high school, and they always say how much they wish their university would offer research to freshmen and sophomores."

Scholarships and Financial Aid

All enrolled chemistry majors are eligible for all Department of Chemistry scholarships. For information about UNL college scholarships, deadlines, and application forms visit the Arts & Sciences Scholarship page.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate.

Undergraduate Research

Gain the opportunity to conduct undergraduate research, often with financial support from UCARE, McNair, NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates, UNL REU's or other sources, that will reinforce and enrich your classroom learning experience. First review the faculty research descriptions and choose two or three faculty to visit with and discuss possible projects and opportunities available. Once your research advisor has been determined you need to also enroll in Chem 399 to earn credit while researching.

UNL Chemistry Faculty/Student Summer Research Program

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Chemistry is excited to announce a summer research experience for a faculty and student pair. For Summer 2011, our inaugural year, we are seeking one pair (one professor and one undergraduate student) from four-year colleges or universities.

Summer stipends will be provided, and it is anticipated that the collaboration will continue during the 2011/2012 academic year. The summer stipend for the professional member will be $6,000 per month for up to two full months of full-time commitment to the project. The student will receive $5,000 plus room and board for 10 weeks of commitment to the project.

Teaching Assistantships

One of the best ways to learn a subject is to teach it. We offer a competitive salary for undergraduate teaching assistants who do an excellent job of overseeing general chemistry labs and recitation/discussion sections. Work experience allows you to present your teaching skills along with your academic record on resumes. “What you are teaching, you are learning.”

Educational Resources

To help you learn, we offer the Chemistry Resource Center and the Undergraduate Instrumentation Center. The Resource Center provides free tutoring by teaching assistants and a computer lab with specialized software. The Undergraduate Instrumentation Center has a large variety of instrumentation where all students have the opportunity to experience hands-on training.

Activities

The Department of Chemistry sponsors two student organizations, the American Chemical Society Student Chemistry Club and Phi Lambda Upsilon, a Chemistry Honor Society that offers a variety of social and professional development opportunities.
