UV-VIS Spectroscopy

Shimadzu UV-160U UV-VIS
shimadzu

The UIC has two Shimadzu UV160U UV-VIS spectrophotometers. Their wavelength range is from 200-1100 nm with a 2 nm resolution. They can acquire data in one of three modes: spectrum scan, photometric, and kinetic.  The standard 1cm x 1cm cell holder is available.

This UV-VIS has a single-beam diode-array detector, which allows a full spectrum to be acquired in as little as 0.1s.  The scanning range is from 200-800 nm.  A temperature cell controlled by a water bath is available for variable temperature experiments.  Kinetics acquisition software is also available.  This UV was recently upgraded to operate in Windows XP, which allows data to be exported to Excel or other processing software.

Both the UV-VIS systems are used in Inorganic Lab (Chem 443), Analytical Lab (Chem 423) and Physical Chemistry Lab (Chem 481) for a variety of experiments, including quantitative analysis, kinetics and determination of refractive indices of solids.
