PROGRAMS OF STUDY
The Department of Chemistry offers graduate programs leading to the
M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in the five basic areas of chemistry: analytical,
biochemical, inorganic, organic, and physical. Although the department is
organized administratively along these traditional divisions of chemistry,
several diverse interdisciplinary programs have evolved. These programs
facilitate research that extends beyond the traditional divisions of chemistry,
either into another division of chemistry, or into another field of science.
For example, students participating in the biotechnology program have roots in
the biochemistry division, but may take courses in molecular biology and plant
physiology. The general goal of the interdisciplinary programs described below
is to prepare chemistry graduates for careers in science and technology
relevant to society's needs in the twenty-first century.
