Scene 16:

Usage of

Solvent Safety CANS

is highly desirable.

Ask your research director

if the budget permits

SAFETY CANS

for your lab!

One crucial item:

Fire Extinguishers

Two main types:

Mar14_02.jpg (57722 bytes)

  • dry chemical (powder) (left -- small nozzle)
  • carbon dioxide (right -- large, horn-like nozzle)
  • Powder extinguishers create a truly horrible mess, if used
  • Avoid using powder extinguishers on a fellow human being!
  • They are also very bad on
  • electronic equipment.

  • Carbon dioxide extinguishers are NO GOOD   for LiAlH4 fires!

CO2 extinguishers are most often RED

Powder extinguishers are also sometimes RED, sometimes, YELLOW or BLUE

You have to read the TAG

to make sure which you are using.

During an EMERGENCY

you WON"T HAVE TIME to read tags,

so do it ahead of time!

  • Keep extinguishers on their

        proper mounting bracket.

  • Don't use extinguishers to prop open doors, and the like!

As indicated above.....

DRY CHEMICAL (powder) extinguishers

make a horrible mess, if used!

Shown below is a scene after a very minor fire

during which a powder extinguisher was used!

Fire Blankets

Rarely used, anymore.

But, should a fire situation arise…

jerk the fire blanket out of its container,

throw over the FIRE or person ON FIRE,

DO your best to smother the flames!
