Research Lab Safety

Safety Equipment

Scene 10:

Vacuum pumps must always

carry a BELT GUARD!

It is desirable

(but not presently required)

that the pump exhaust be

vented   to the hood!

Scene 11:

Cylinders, with gases under high pressure,

must  be anchored

using a cylinder support.

The above scene shows

IMPROPER

anchoring of the cylinder.

If a poorly supported cylinder falls over,

the upper valve will probably rupture,

and the cylinder will become a torpedo!

Fatalities are quite likely.

The following scene shows

a properly supported cylinder.

Scene 12:

If a cylinder is to be moved,

MAKE SURE A VALVE COVER

is in place!

Move the cylinder ONLY with

a cylinder cart!

  • What's GOOD:
    • Valve cover in place
    • Cylinder cart being used
  • What's BAD:
    • Chain strap does not offer adequate support
    • Additional restraint is needed in this particular case.

Scene 13:

Bulk Flammable Solvents

must be stored in an approved

SOLVENT STORAGE CABINET,

  • not in the hood
  • not below the sink
  • not under the hood
  • not on the benchtop

The STORAGE CABINET

must be latched when not in use,

especially overnight.

Scene 14:

Only approved laboratory refrigerators

may be used.

Generally, these will be EXPLOSION PROOF!

Or

"approved for FLAMMABLE MATERIALS STORAGE"

  • The following scene shows proper storage practices in a
  • laboratory refrigerator.
    • all chemicals labeled
    • care taken so that the labels do not drop off
    • neat, orderly arrangement

  • defrost more often than once every 10 years
  • Don't store unsealed cans of flammables such as ethyl ether in a refrigerator, even if it is explosion proof.
  • Store your lunch elsewhere!

Scene 15:

Fire Doors

The doors to each lab are

Class A FIRE DOORS

(gypsum filled).

They will contain a raging blaze for 1 full hr.

Obviously, propping the door open

defeats this purpose
