Our 125th Anniversary First Published Research Paper
In the summer of 1883 following his first year at Nebraska, Hudson H. Nicholson attended the Harvard Short Course in Chemistry taught by Charles F. Mabery from Case University. This was an important event for Nicholson for many reasons. He accomplished enough organic chemistry work to publish a journal article, the first chemistry research published by someone from the University of Nebraska. The citation is Mabery and Nicholson (1884) “XLII.―On β-Dibromdichlorpropionic and β-Bromdichloracrylic Acids” American Chemical Journal 6, 165-169. (see original journal article)This journal became the Journal of the American Chemical Society in 1912. Nicholson also met the widow Rachel Lloyd, who was attending the summer course for her eighth year in a row. Four years later he would hire her as Nebraska’s second chemistry professor. |
